For many farmers in Germany, the weather fax from Bayer CropScience is the first thing they read every morning. The report provides detailed information on rainfall, temperatures and wind speeds. All of these factors have an enormous effect on correct dosing of a crop protection agent and the ideal time for harvesting. From the beginning of April through to the end of October, Bayer CropScience in Langenfeld informs farmers throughout Germany about their regional weather by fax or e-mail. The company does this using the Retarus fax and e-mail infrastructure. Retarus sends out the regional agricultural weather forecasts as a mixed broadcast to several thousand fax and e-mail recipients.
Retarus, Europe's largest provider of professional messaging solutions, obtains the information required from three different sources. Firstly, consultants from Bayer CropScience with local knowledge write the recommendations for crop cultivation and protection in an authoring system. Secondly, the addresses of the farmers originate from the company's CRM system. The postcode-based weather forecasts from Wetternet GmbH, Wiesbaden are the third data source. All of the "weather faxes" and "weather e-mails" are sent out automatically every morning between six and seven o'clock. This period was found to the most suitable after a detailed survey of the forecast recipients.
Each farmer therefore receives his own "personal" local weather with the information relevant for him. Equipped with this up-to-date weather forecast and the corresponding recommendations, farmers can decide at short notice whether the weather conditions necessitate the use of specific crop protection agents or pesticides.
In addition to the "Weather bulletin" for farmers, Bayer CropScience also sends out information for ambitious hobby gardeners to DIY stores every week. These bulletins deal primarily with pest detection and control.
