The latest analysis of the millions of spam mails which are filtered every day in the Retarus Data Center shows an interesting shift in the physical origin of unwanted marketing e-mails. In 2008 most of these e-mails originated in the USA (13.8%), but this year has seen Russia (8.6%) overtake the USA (8.3%) to become the leading country of origin for spam e-mails.
There has also been a marked change in the ranking of countries in the spam stakes. Both China and Brazil have leaped five positions higher on the spam hit parade. A year ago China was placed eighth on the list with 4.0%, but its participation in spam mailing has almost doubled to 7.9%, propelling it to third place. Brazil, ninth in 2008 with 3.8%, has also shot up to fourth place with 7.8% of spam messages originating from the country. A new entry into the top ten is India, which is now ranked eighth with 4.2%.
These trends confirm that the “BRIC countries“ – Brazil, Russia, India and China - which have shown the greatest potential for economic growth in recent years have now also shown their potential to grow in the spam-distribution stakes. A year ago the four countries were the origin of 17% of total spam volume, which has climbed within the past year to 28.6% of all unrequested marketing emails.
The current protection provided by the messaging specialist reveals new dangers, explains Retarus‘ Vice President Managed Services, Oliver Pannenbäcker: “Taking a closer look at the ranking of countries in which spam originates, one can see that the amount of spam sent is shared more equally than a year previously. This confirms a trend that has been apparent for several months now. Instead of dealing with a few big spam distributors, we are increasingly dealing with a large number of small operators, who are all looking to find and exploit leaks in spam filters. In the daily battle against a flood of spam and the backdrop of an increasing number of spy attacks aiming not only to fish for banking details of private individuals, but also specifically targeting confidential business details, this means that we have to continue to take action against spammers in order to protect companies.“
