In the European automotive industry there is no option of avoiding OFTP (Odette File Transfer Protocol). The protocol was developed by Odette International Ltd and is used for exchanging transactional and logistic data, as well as sharing engineering data (CAx).
Ready for use within 24 hours thanks to Cloud Computing
Retarus Communication Services for OFTP2, certified by Odette International Ltd, enables all participants in the supply chain to switch over to the new standard within a very short period of time (generally within 24 hours). Retarus' experts have developed pre-configured services for OEMs, in which the suppliers' data is transferred via a secure connection to Retarus' data centers irrespective of the EDI system currently in use. The data is then sent on in an encrypted form via OFTP2 to the chosen recipient. In the same way Retarus transfers received data to suppliers in the format of their choice. All these services are provided as Cloud Computing solutions, allowing the participating companies to save on expensive updates and avoid technological problems that could occur during migration.
Automotive suppliers compelled to act
"The introduction of OFTP2 will affect the entire automotive industry", estimates Björn Georg, Head of Business Process Automation at Retarus. "The Volvo Group is leading the way – on 30 June they ceased transmitting data via X.25, and by 31 December ISDN communication will also cease. As a result suppliers to this manufacturer are also compelled to react by switching to OFTP2 for their electronic communication. As Retarus EDI Communication Services support OFTP2, we are able to offer an inexpensive and flexible alternative to purchasing a costly OFTP2-Moduls. The Volkswagen Group also insists on using OFTP2 for data interchange. PSA and BMW will also move over to using only OFTP2 for electronically exchanging engineering data during 2010."
Secure and transparent data interchange via OFTP2
For many years OFTP version 1.1 met the demand for secure and traceable data interchange. The only shortcoming was the long transmission times for engineering data resulting from bandwidth issues, resulting in raised costs. The current version OFTP2 ensures that these problems belong to the past. The communication is based on TCP/IP with SSL encryption, which requires the use of authenticated certificates. This means that verifiable, internet-based transmission of EDI and CAD data has now been safeguarded.
