{"id":25750,"date":"2018-10-31T13:01:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T13:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.retarus.com\/blog\/with-lexmark-and-retarus-you-fax-without-risk\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T12:53:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T12:53:22","slug":"with-lexmark-and-retarus-you-fax-without-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.retarus.com\/blog\/en\/with-lexmark-and-retarus-you-fax-without-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Lexmark and Retarus enable risk-free faxing with MFPs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CERT-Bund, the Computer Emergency Response Team for German federal authorities and agencies, has put out an alert, warning users of two security vulnerabilities in an assortment of Lexmark\u2019s multi-functional printer devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color faxing with MFPs &#8211; a security issue?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manufacturer had already published a warning in this regard <a href=\"http:\/\/support.lexmark.com\/index?page=content&amp;id=TE892&amp;modifiedDate=08\/24\/18&amp;actp=LIST_RECENT&amp;userlocale=EN_US&amp;locale=en\" rel=\"nofollow\">at the end of August<\/a>. With the security gap which has been rated the more serious of the two, an attack can be carried out by way of using a manipulated color fax either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cert-bund.de\/advisoryshort\/CB-K18-1036%20UPDATE%201\" rel=\"nofollow\">to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the service<\/a>; the other one can create crash, resulting in a Denial of Service condition. While Lexmark has already made updated firmware correcting the vulnerabilities available, a short-term workaround until the update has been installed would be to deactivate the option for receiving color faxes (which virtually never occur in the real world).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lexmark customers who have connected their MFPs to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retarus.com\/services\/fax\/\">Cloud Fax Services<\/a> provided by Retarus, can confidently and safely ignore the warning.
