TRILUX plays it safe with Retarus Email Security and Encryption

The Sauerland-based lighting solution specialist TRILUX protects around 3500 email inboxes with Retarus Email Security and encrypts messages with Retarus Email Encryption. All incoming and outgoing messages are routed via Retarus’ cloud gateway.

Initial Situation

Email security via third-party providers

Based in Arnsberg, Germany, TRILUX GmbH & Co. KG develops and manufactures lighting solutions for use in professional office, industrial, outdoor and retail settings. Founded in 1912, the company employs around 4,000 workers across Europe.

Before changing to Retarus, TRILUX was employing a security solution offered by a third-party provider. Faced with an imminent license extension, TRILUX decided to analyze the market and launch a tender in tandem with Bosch CyberCompare to enable the company to find the most suitable email security solution. The company succeeded in concluding the selection process in less than 6 months, including shortlisting, RFP, PoC and final negotiations. Retarus was awarded the contract in May 2024.

Objective

All-encompassing, full-service solution

One of TRILUX’s key objectives was to find a comprehensive solution that incorporates encryption with certificate management along with all essential email security functions for inbound and outbound emails, while also facilitating the operative handling of messages (reporting, administration, releasing blocked emails and attachments).

Factors that clinched the contract for Retarus included the high degree to which the provider could fulfill the catalog of requirements, the highly professional product demonstration and the customer onboarding procedure.

We have been working closely together as partners at all levels, from the contractual agreement to project management and all the way through to the technical aspects.”

Guido Koert, IT GRC Manager, TRILUX

Specific challenges / Approach

PoC, Go-live, feature fine-tuning

The plan for rolling out the solution was conceived in close collaboration with Retarus. To start with, a
PoC (proof of concept) was conducted, which laid the groundwork for the solution to go live across the entire TRILUX group approximately two months later. The legacy systems previously run on site could subsequently be deactivated. Apart from this, the company was generally able to continue running its familiar workflows and processes without requiring any changes.

Retarus’ Secure Email Gateway (SEG) was connected to TRILUX’s Exchange Online using Retarus’ standard applications (i.e., changing the MX records). Minor teething problems with setting up DKIM and certificates were quickly solved by the customer support team. In the meantime, all other open topics – including the lack of single sign-on (SSO) / multi-factor authentication and the option to deactivate time-of-click protection for selected senders – have been solved to TRILUX’s full satisfaction.

Benefits

Flawless delivery, handy digest

A brief handout was published on TRILUX’s intranet to assist staff in using the digest. There were no acceptance issues as Retarus’ services are basically transparent and intuitive for end users to work with. When it comes to the digest, users benefit from wide-ranging self-service options (better reports, easy release of quarantined messages and attachments) and a high degree of transparency.

TRILUX’s objectives were fully met, and the Retarus service has been running continuously without disruption since it was introduced.
