Graymail … or the tricky gray zone between newsletter and spam

Retarus E-Mail Security customers are given the option of either marking legitimate mass-emails for immediate delivery or choosing to send them straight to quarantine by way of precaution.

So far we have simply been calling all such legitimate mass email transmissions “newsletters”. But from now on we will instead be using the more accurate term “graymail”, as such messages often occupy the gray zone between wanted, consciously subscribed contents and unrequested spam. For instance, newsletters on topics in which one has lost interest over time or over-eager notifications from carrier networks – the list is endless.

According to Wikipedia, those messages can easily account for more than 80 percent of the average email inbox. Technically, it is very challenging to distinguish accurately between a newsletter and spam – in large part because the respective pain thresholds, beyond which recipients may find themselves bothered by a certain message, can vary greatly between different users.

Newsletter settings in EAS

In the digest mails provided by Retarus E-Mail Security, we have already started using the term “Graymail” rather than the previous “Newsletter” as the reason an email has been sent into quarantine. In the EAS portal for administrators, we will be changing the terminology along with the next update at the end of November. Then “Mark newsletter and deliver” and “Quarantine newsletter” will accordingly be replaced with “Mark graymail and deliver” and “Quarantine graymail”.
