Email is not just here to stay, but growing from strength to strength

Market researchers are predicting that the number of email users around the globe is set to rise from 2.6 billion today to over 3 billion by the year 2020. And this calculation does not even include mobile usage.

According to the latest “Email Market, 2016-2020“ report by the Radicati Group ($2,500 – executive summary free as PDF), turnover for all segments of the email market taken together is expected to rise from around 19 billion dollars in 2016 to an astounding 45.4 billion dollars by the end of 2020, which corresponds with an average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24 percent. It is anticipated that this significant growth in turnover will mainly be driven by the cloud migration of existing on-premise email accounts.

Radicati subdivides the market into the following segments: Enterprise Messaging Platforms (primarily Microsoft Exchange and IBM Domino), Messaging Platforms for Service Providers (here Open-Xchange in Nürnberg is amongst the leaders), Cloud Business Email (Office 365, Google Apps etc.), Email Clients (e.g. IBM Notes, Microsoft Outlook) as well as Consumer Email (Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail etc.).

Shift towards the cloud

For Enterprise Messaging Platforms, Radicati detects a steady downturn for both the installed base and revenues earned. This is due to an increasing number of users changing over to the cloud for their messaging and collaboration services.

The report also confirms that the rapid growth which has consequently occurred in the Cloud Business Email sector has taken place across companies of all sizes and sectors. As there are now no longer any functional distinctions between on-premise email solutions and cloud email services, more and more enterprises are looking to reduce their deployment costs by migrating to the cloud.

Even for end-consumer e-mail, experts are expecting sustained growth – partly due to the fact that an email address is a basic prerequisite for registering with just about every online service.

Ever increasing email volumes

The Radicati Group also estimates that there will be a continued rise in the total email traffic worldwide. Business and private messages taken together, daily email traffic is set to rise by an average of 5 percent over the next four years – from 215 billion emails per day at the end of 2016 to 257 billion emails each day by 2020.
